Aspiring Commercial Pilots Now Have a More Efficient Career Path
Attaining a successful career in aviation just got easier, especially for high school students!
Tennessee Flight Training (TNFT) has joined with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University – the world’s largest, fully accredited university specializing in aviation and aerospace – to offer students an educational path to a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics degree while training locally for a pilot’s license.
The agreement makes it possible for TNFT students to complete training as fully licensed commercial pilots and apply those hours as credit towards earning their bachelor’s degree. The major benefit of this approach is the reduced hourly rate of training compared with normal tuition rates, which can save thousands of dollars in educational expenses.

- Ideal for high school students
- Earn college credit ahead of time, while you learn to become a pilot

- Discount tuition for online courses
Depending on the type of pilot training, some students could earn as much as a full year of college credit at a fraction of the cost.
“Any high school student can earn a private pilot’s license through TNFT, then parlay that license into three credits at Embry-Riddle,” said Chris Erlanson, Tennessee Flight Training’s owner and president. “Those credits go towards a B.S. in Aeronautics. With additional ratings, students can be even further along in college credit-hours, which enables a much more efficient use of tuition dollars in the long run.
“This program offers our students an opportunity to receive an Embry-Riddle education while working towards a pilot license at our school, preparing them to enter the aviation industry as successful commercial pilots,” he said.
Pilot Shortage
TNFT’s agreement with Embry-Riddle comes at a particularly advantageous time, as various industry reports indicate the supply of qualified commercial pilots is not meeting the needs for pilots in the industry. As a result, qualified pilots are expected to be in high demand for many years to come.
In addition to pilot training at TNFT, high school students can take online courses concurrently with Embry-Riddle at a nearly 75% discount compared with on-campus tuition rates.
“We’re excited to offer this program for students who find the traditional university route too cost-prohibitive. It’s a great alternative path for those aspiring aviators who want a more affordable option,” Erlanson added.
